Styrofoam

What is Styrofoam?

Trademarked and manufactured by American chemical company DuPont, Styrofoam is a brand of closed–cell, general–purpose polystyrene foam. It is formed by heating and expanding tiny beads of polystyrene with steam. It is most commonly white in colour, with a hard but brittle texture.

Why use Foam in a CNC cutter?

Styrofoam is at its most manageable and functional when it is shaped into blocks or sheets by a CNC foam cutter. Foam is a popular material choice because it is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, resistant to bacterial growth, noise and temperature changes (making it fantastic for insulation) and it has great shock absorption qualities.

What can you make from CNC cut Styrofoam?

As mentioned, foam is most commonly used for insulation and packaging on both a domestic and a commercial scale. Around the home, it’s great as food containers for fruit, vegetables, seafood and egg cartons, as well as inside parcels to prevent item breakages during transit. It can also be used in the home – literally – in the foundations, walls and roof as a barrier against moisture and water and moisture and thermal insulation. It can also be used to make temporary props and flotation devices.
